Polylactic acid (PLA) is a type of polyester, while lactic acid (LA) is a biologically occurring monomer. PLA is thermoplastic and can be processed into films, sheets and fibers using the same process as normal plastics. PLA can be soft or hard. It is transparent in itself, but can also be made into opaque materials, and fillers can be added. Because of its high strength, it can be made into very thin sheets. PLA is insoluble in water and has good water and oil resistance.
